Key takeaways
- Eight AI answering services ranked, with PATLive and Ruby as live price baselines, every price read on the vendor's own page on November 5 or 6, 2026.
- At 300 three-minute calls a month the bill runs from $129 on Goodcall and $149 on Rosie to $299 on Botcadence, inside its 1,500 included minutes, and $1,499 on PATLive's live plan.
- Botcadence and Rosie's $299 plan keep trying your on-call list; the rest publish a single transfer or message. On a gas-smell call that difference is the whole product.
- Spanish on the same line: Rosie and Botcadence. Smith.ai, PATLive and Ruby use bilingual receptionists.
- Already on Jobber, Housecall Pro or ServiceTitan? Try the built-in receptionist first, then read the section on when a standalone agent beats it.
How we judged them
We build Botcadence, an AI voice and chat agent platform for small businesses, and we have put ourselves first. The other nine are the services buyers compare us with. Every price was read on the vendor's own pricing page on November 5 or 6, 2026 (Ruby on October 23), and each entry links to it. We rank managed answering services only: products where you forward your number and the service answers as an AI receptionist on the inbound voice channel. Developer platforms such as Retell, Vapi and Bland are in the best AI voice agents list instead, and the HVAC and restoration roundups cover those trades in depth.
Six things decide the order:
- Safety and escalation. Does it ask the questions that change what happens next, and does it keep alerting your on-call person until someone replies?
- Booking during the call into a real calendar.
- Published pricing with included minutes or calls and a clear overage rate.
- Billing fairness: are hang-ups and spam billed as whole minutes or calls?
- Spanish on the same line.
- Where the record goes: inbox, CRM or field-service software.

What 300 calls a month costs
Three-minute calls, 900 minutes, on the plan a shop would already have.
| Service | Monthly cost at 300 calls | How it was worked out |
|---|
| Goodcall | $129 | Growth plan, 500 unique callers |
| Rosie | $149 | Scale plan, 1,000 minutes |
| My AI Front Desk | $274 | $99 plus 700 extra minutes at 25 cents |
| Botcadence | $299 | Inside the 1,500 included minutes |
| Dialzara | $349 | Elite plan, 1,000 minutes |
| Smith.ai AI receptionist | $500 | Enterprise tier at $1.67 a call |
| Sameday | $789 | Scale plan, 1,000 minutes |
| PATLive | $1,499 | 1,000-minute plan |
The two cheapest options are cheaper because they count differently: Goodcall counts callers, not minutes, and Rosie's $149 plan includes more minutes per dollar than ours. What Botcadence charges for is the escalation ladder, Spanish on the same line and web chat, WhatsApp, SMS and Instagram included. If you don't need those, the cheaper services are the honest pick.
What each one does on an emergency call
This is where the list separates. On a gas-smell or burst-pipe call the right first words are a safety instruction, not a booking question.
Botcadence: best for emergency-heavy trades
Botcadence runs the safety script first, takes the intake, then texts and calls your on-call person and the backup, by default three times five minutes apart, until someone acknowledges. The free HVAC emergency triage script and water damage intake script are the exact order it follows.
Rosie: best for the lowest price per minute with Spanish
Rosie texts or emails your on-call crew, can call them and connect the caller, and sends booking links; its $299 plan tries several numbers in turn.
Goodcall: best for low volume and repeat callers
Goodcall gives you "workers" and tools you configure yourself; there is no published escalation ladder.
Smith.ai: best for teams that may add human receptionists later
Smith.ai transfers to your team and can fall back to its human receptionists.
Dialzara, My AI Front Desk, Sameday and Loman: message-taking, transfer and booking
Dialzara (best for very small businesses starting cheap), My AI Front Desk (a built-in CRM), Sameday (ServiceTitan shops) and Loman (restaurants) publish message-taking, transfer and booking; none publishes a repeating escalation.
Test it yourself: call each demo line and say "I smell gas." The Botcadence HVAC demo and the restoration demo answer 24/7.
Who should pick what
- You want the cheapest AI that works: Goodcall at low volume, Rosie above about 250 minutes a month.
- You need Spanish: Rosie or Botcadence, both on the same line; Smith.ai with bilingual receptionists.
- You run ServiceTitan and want it built in: Sameday, or ServiceTitan's own AI Voice Agent, compared in our Jobber vs Housecall Pro vs ServiceTitan AI post.
PATLive and Ruby: best for a person on every call
Budget for the busiest month, since both bill operator time.
- Emergencies are the calls you can't miss, and customers also text and message you: Botcadence. See AI vs live answering service for HVAC if you haven't decided between AI and a person.
When a standalone AI beats the one built into Jobber, Housecall Pro or ServiceTitan
If you run one of the big three, try its receptionist first. Jobber Receptionist is a $29 add-on with 30 conversations, then 79 cents each, and included on Jobber Plus; Housecall Pro and ServiceTitan price theirs through a demo, and ServiceTitan bills every call. A booking lands on your board with nothing to re-key, and you have nothing new to log into.
A standalone service from this list wins in four cases:
- Escalation. Jobber texts or transfers to one escalation contact, Housecall Pro forwards to a number you choose and ServiceTitan transfers to a live agent. None publishes an alert that repeats and moves to a backup when the first person doesn't pick up at 2 am.
- Spanish. Jobber's help center doesn't state it and Housecall Pro lists it as coming; only ServiceTitan switches automatically.
- Chat. None of the three answers WhatsApp, Instagram or SMS with the same agent, so customers who text get a different experience from customers who call.
- Your plan. The built-in agents need particular packages, and Housecall Pro's Zapier connection can only create a customer. A standalone agent reaches all three through Zapier or webhooks; the built-in AI receptionist comparison has the field map.
The rule: built in when the booking must land natively and the calls are routine; standalone when the calls that matter arrive after hours, in Spanish or by text.
Six test calls to make before you sign
- An emergency: "I smell gas" or "water is coming through my ceiling."
- A booking: check that the slot appears in your calendar.
- A request for a person: listen to the transfer.
- A Spanish caller.
- A hang-up after ten seconds: then ask how it was billed.
- A second call while the first is still connected.
Then price your busiest month last year, including overage, on each one. The AI answering service cost guide explains the four pricing models, and the AI voice agent page shows what ours does on a live call.
