Key takeaways
- Ten business chatbots ranked on grounding, setup, channels, handoff and the cost of the AI unit, prices read November 6, 2026.
- Entry prices run from $19 per agent on Freshchat to $150 on Botpress; Botcadence Starter is $39 with a free plan of 100 AI replies a month.
- The AI unit decides the bill: flat reply allowances (Botcadence, Jotform), conversation packs (Botpress, Tidio), credits (Chatbase, Crisp), per outcome (Intercom at $0.99, Zendesk at $2.00) or per session (Freshchat at $49 per 100).
- If customers also write on WhatsApp and Instagram, pick a tool with those channels on the same plan rather than as add-ons.
- Test two tools with the same 20 questions and count the confident wrong answers; that is the number that decides it.
How we chose
We build Botcadence, an AI chat and voice agent platform, and we rank it first. The rest are the tools small and mid-size businesses compare us with. Every price was read on the vendor's pricing page on November 6, 2026 and links to it; where a page showed only annual billing we say so. We judged on six things: whether answers are grounded in your own content, how long setup takes, which channels one plan covers, how the handoff to a person works, what the AI unit costs, and whether there is a free plan you can keep.

Botcadence: best for one grounded agent across chat and phone
Free plan with 100 AI replies a month, Starter at $39 with 600 replies included and website chat, WhatsApp and Instagram; Growth at $99 adds Telegram, Slack, SMS and email with 2,000 replies. One agent, grounded in your documents, answers every channel, and the same agent takes the phone on the $299 Voice AI plan; see the chat agents page.
Tidio: best for ecommerce stores that want live chat plus AI
Free plan with 50 conversations, then $24.17 a month on an annual basis, with Lyro AI conversations sold separately from $32.50 a month for 50. Live chat first, AI as the helper.
Chatbase: best for a fast custom-GPT style agent
No free plan; $40 a month for 700 message credits and $40 per 1,000 more. The quickest way to put a grounded bot on a website widget, WhatsApp, Messenger or Slack.
Botpress: best for builders who want full control of flows
Free plan with 100 conversations, then $150 a month billed annually, metered on conversations plus an AI usage credit. A full builder for teams with someone who will own the flows.
Jotform AI Agents: best for teams already on Jotform forms
Free plan with 100 conversations, then $39 a month, metered on conversations across chat, phone and SMS by plan. The natural pick when your forms already live in Jotform.
Crisp: best for small teams that want a shared inbox first
Free plan with 2 seats and no AI credits, then $45 a month on Mini with about 90 automated conversations in AI credits. The inbox is the product; the AI is an add-on to it.
Freshchat: best for Freshworks customers
Free for up to 10 agents, then $19 per agent a month billed annually, with Freddy AI sessions at $49 per 100. Any contact within 24 hours counts once.
Landbot: best for visual flow builders
Free plan with 100 chats, then €32 a month billed annually, with AI chats at €0.10 each above the plan. A drag-and-drop builder for website, WhatsApp and Messenger.
Zendesk AI agents: best for established support teams
14-day trial, then $55 per agent a month billed annually, with automated resolutions at $2.00 pay as you go. The right choice when the tickets already live in Zendesk.
Intercom with Fin: best for product-led SaaS with a help center
14-day trial, then $29 per seat a month plus $0.99 per Fin outcome; phone and WhatsApp are add-ons. Strong on a large help center, priced on how often the bot succeeds.
What the AI unit does to the bill
The headline price is rarely the bill. Each vendor meters AI differently:
- Replies included in a flat plan (Botcadence, Jotform): predictable, and the cheapest when the agent is busy. Conversation packs (Botpress, Tidio) climb sooner.
- Credits (Chatbase, Crisp, Chatfuel): you buy a pool and watch it drain; good for low, variable volume.
- Per outcome or resolution (Intercom at $0.99, Zendesk at $2.00): you pay more the better the agent works.
- Per session (Freshchat at $49 per 100): any contact within 24 hours counts once.
Work out one busy month before you compare. The AI chatbot pricing guide does it for ten platforms at 500, 2,000 and 10,000 conversations.
The three questions that decide it
- Where do your customers write to you? If it is WhatsApp and Instagram as well as the website, pick a tool where those channels are on the same plan rather than add-ons. The website chatbot and Instagram chatbot pages show how one Botcadence agent covers both.
- Who fixes a wrong answer? Grounded tools (Botcadence, Chatbase, Tidio's Lyro) answer only from your documents, so you fix the document. Flow builders (Botpress, Landbot, Chatfuel) need someone to edit the flow.
- What happens when the bot can't help? Look for a handoff that carries the transcript into a shared inbox, not a "leave your email" dead end. The chat agents page describes the rules Botcadence uses.
- You run an ecommerce store on Shopify and want live chat first with AI as a helper: Tidio.
- You want to build complex branching flows yourself: Botpress or Landbot.
- You already pay for Zendesk, Freshworks or Jotform and only need AI on top: their own agents.
- You want a chatbot on a product help center with a large existing article base: Intercom's Fin, if the per-outcome price works at your volume.
How to test any of them in an hour
If you are a one-location business, the chatbot for small business guide narrows this to six options; support teams should read the best AI chatbot for customer service list, and sales teams the chatbot for lead generation guide.
Take the last 20 questions from your inbox. Upload the same documents to two tools, ask all 20 in each, and count three things: correct answers, confident wrong answers, and handoffs. The confident wrong answers are the number that decides it.
