Key takeaways
- Eight support chatbots compared on grounding, handoff and cost at 2,000 conversations a month with 40% automated, prices read November 6, 2026.
- At that volume the bill is $99 on Botcadence Growth (2,000 AI replies, if automated conversations average 2.5 replies), $150 on Chatbase, $295 on Crisp, about $400 on Tidio (Starter plus Lyro for 800 conversations), about $449 on Freshchat, about $879 on Intercom, about $1,000 on Botpress and about $1,765 on Zendesk.
- Per-resolution pricing (Intercom, Zendesk) costs the most when the bot works best; flat and conversation plans don't.
- The handoff must carry the transcript and the captured fields to a person, not open a one-line ticket.
- If your whole stack is Zendesk or Intercom, use their agent and accept the per-resolution bill.
How we judged
Customer service is where a wrong answer costs the most, so this list weights grounding, handoff and the record over flow-building features. We build Botcadence, an AI chat and voice agent platform, and rank it first; the other seven are the tools support teams compare us with. Prices were read on each vendor's pricing page on November 6, 2026. We scored: answers grounded in your own help content, handoff to a person with the transcript, channels on one plan, what happens outside support hours, where the record goes, and the cost of the AI unit at 2,000 conversations a month.

Botcadence: best for teams that want chat and phone support from one agent
Grounded in your documents and crawled pages, with a shared inbox and handoff rules you write; AI replies are included in the plan, so 2,000 conversations with 40% automated is $99 on Growth if the 800 automated conversations average 2.5 replies, and $199 on Business above that. The same agent answers the phone on the Voice AI plan; see the customer support chatbot use case.
Tidio with Lyro: best for ecommerce support with live chat
Lyro answers from your content and hands off to live chat; Lyro conversations are metered, so the same volume lands at about $400 (Starter plus a Lyro pack for 800 conversations). Order lookups on Shopify are the reason to pick it.
Zendesk AI agents: best for teams already on Zendesk
Grounded in your help center, with handoff straight into Zendesk tickets, at $2.00 per automated resolution; about $1,765 with 3 agents at this volume. Choose it when the tickets already live there.
Intercom Fin: best for product-led SaaS with a mature help center
Grounded in your help center and docs, with handoff into the Intercom inbox, at $0.99 per outcome; about $879 with 3 seats at this volume. Priced on how often the bot succeeds.
Freshchat with Freddy: best for Freshworks customers
Grounded, with handoff into Freshchat, at $49 per 100 sessions; about $449 with 3 agents at this volume. The natural choice inside Freshworks.
Crisp: best for small teams that want the inbox first
Grounded, with a shared inbox handoff and AI credits; $295 on Plus at this volume. The inbox is the product.
Chatbase: best for a quick deflection bot on a help page
Grounded, with basic handoff through integrations, on message credits; $150 on Basic at this volume. Fast to launch on one page.
Botpress: best for teams with a developer who wants control
Grounding and handoff are built, not configured; metered on conversations plus AI usage, about $1,000 at this volume. Full control for a team that will own the flows.
What matters in support, in order
Grounding. The agent must answer from your help content and nothing else, and say so when it doesn't know. Every tool on the list can do this; the difference is how easy it is to see which document produced a wrong answer. In Botcadence the transcript shows the source passage.
Handoff. When a rule fires, the person should see the whole conversation and the captured fields, not a new ticket with one line. The intelligent agent handoff on Botcadence carries both; Zendesk and Intercom carry it into their own inboxes; Chatbase relies on integrations.
Hours. Support chat is busiest when the team is offline. Check what the bot does at 11 pm: Botcadence takes the message and keeps the thread open; some tools show an offline form.
The record. Transcripts, tags and a summary should reach the helpdesk or CRM without copying. Botcadence writes to Zendesk, HubSpot and Salesforce; Intercom and Zendesk are the helpdesk.
The unit. Per-resolution pricing (Intercom, Zendesk) charges most when the bot works best. Flat plans (Botcadence, Jotform) and conversation plans (Tidio, Botpress) don't. The AI chatbot pricing guide has the arithmetic.
- Your whole support stack is Zendesk or Intercom and you need the AI inside those tickets: use their agents and accept the per-resolution bill.
- You run a Shopify store and want order lookups with live chat: Tidio.
- You want to script complex multi-step flows: Botpress.
- You only need a deflection bot on one help page: Chatbase.
Measure it
Track three numbers before and after: first-response time, the share of conversations closed without a person, and the repeat-contact rate within 7 days. The support cost guide explains how to build the baseline. If customers also phone you, the AI voice agent answers from the same content.
