Quick answer

A lead generation chatbot replaces the form with a conversation: it answers the visitor's question, asks one qualifying question per answer, scores fit and intent against your rules, books a meeting in the chat for hot leads and writes the score and answers to your CRM. Botcadence does this on the website, WhatsApp and Instagram from $39 a month; Chatbase, Landbot, Tidio and Intercom are the alternatives on prices checked November 6, 2026. See lead scoring.

What a lead generation chatbot does

A lead generation chatbot replaces the form with a conversation. It greets the visitor with a question instead of a field, answers what they ask, collects the details a salesperson needs in the flow of talking, scores the lead against your rules and either books a meeting on the spot or routes the record to the right person. The difference from a support bot is intent: it is tuned to qualify and convert, not to deflect. We build Botcadence, which does this on the website, WhatsApp and Instagram, and we rank it first below.

How the conversation should run

  1. Open with the visitor's problem, not your product. "What are you trying to fix?" gets more replies than "Hi! Want a demo?" in our own chats.
  2. Answer first, ask second. Every answer earns the right to one qualifying question: company size or job type, timing, budget band, current tool.
  3. Score as you go. Fit (are they the kind of customer you serve) and intent (how soon, how much). Hot leads get a calendar; warm leads get the information and a follow-up; cold leads get a polite answer.
  4. Book while they are on the page. A meeting booked in the chat holds better than an email sent later, because the visitor is still on the page.
  5. Hand off the hot ones live when a salesperson is online, with the transcript, so nobody re-asks the questions.
  6. Write everything to the CRM with the score, the answers and the source page.

The lead qualification automation guide has the rubric; the lead scoring feature page shows how Botcadence applies it.

What to measure

  • Conversation-to-lead rate: visitors who started a chat and left contact details.
  • Lead-to-meeting rate: how many booked.
  • Speed to first human touch for hot leads.
  • Junk rate: leads sales rejected, which tells you whether the scoring rules are too loose.

The first two usually move within the first week; the meeting rate depends on how fast sales follows up. Compare against your form's numbers for the same month last year.

Mistakes that kill lead bots

  • Asking for the email before answering anything.
  • Six qualifying questions in a row.
  • A "book a demo" that opens a form instead of a calendar.
  • No handoff when the visitor says "can I talk to someone".
  • Scoring rules nobody revisits after sales complains about junk.

Beyond the website

The same questions arrive on WhatsApp and Instagram, where visitors expect a reply in minutes. Botcadence runs one agent across the website chatbot, WhatsApp and Instagram DMs, with the same scoring and the same CRM write, and the chat agents page shows the proactive mode that opens the conversation on high-intent pages. For inbound calls, the AI voice agent qualifies the same way by phone.

Chatbot for Lead Generation 2026 FAQ

A chat agent tuned to qualify and convert rather than deflect: it answers questions, collects the details a salesperson needs in conversation, scores the lead, books a meeting or routes the record, and writes everything to the CRM.

Botcadence for website, WhatsApp and Instagram with scoring, in-chat booking and CRM writes from $39 a month; Chatbase for fast website setup; Landbot for designed flows; Tidio for stores; Intercom for SaaS teams already on it. Prices checked November 6, 2026.

One per answer it gives, four or five in total: what they are trying to do, company size or job type, timing, budget band and current tool. Six in a row with no answers in between is where visitors leave.

Yes. Botcadence and Intercom book in the chat against Calendly, Cal.com or Google Calendar; Chatbase, Landbot and Tidio book through integrations. A meeting booked in the chat converts better than an email sent later.

The agent scores each answer against fit and intent rules you write, tags the conversation hot, warm or cold, and routes accordingly: calendar for hot, information plus follow-up for warm, a polite answer for cold. The score goes to the CRM.

Conversation-to-lead rate, lead-to-meeting rate, speed to first human touch for hot leads, and the junk rate sales rejects, compared with your form's numbers for the same month last year.

Yes. Botcadence runs the same agent, scoring and CRM write on the website, WhatsApp and Instagram DMs, where visitors expect a reply in minutes.

Asking for the email before answering anything, six questions in a row, a demo button that opens a form instead of a calendar, no handoff when someone asks for a person, and scoring rules nobody revisits.
